How to Maintain Your Concrete Coating

How to Maintain Your Concrete Coating

Concrete coatings are a low-maintenance flooring alternative that can be used on the interior and exterior of your home.  Because of their versatility and durability, they are an excellent flooring choice.  Low maintenance is not the same as no maintenance though.  All flooring needs some degree of care to look its best.

Maintaining your concrete coating is an easy task, particularly when done routinely and correctly.  Regularly cleaning your concrete-coated floors with gentle cleanser and addressing spills as they occur will help maintain their beauty for years.

Concrete Coatings Hawaii offers polyurea concrete coatings for your residential, commercial, and industrial needs.  After installing our superior products with quality workmanship, we want you to enjoy your floors, pool decks, etc. for many years to come.  In this article, we will give you tips for maintaining your concrete coating so it looks its very best!

Do I Need to Clean Concrete Coating?

All flooring should be cleaned.  Think about what happens on floors.  First, think of all the feet – big and little, clean and dirty!  Next, think of all the paws – doggies running on the grass where they pottied and kitties that just exited the litter box.  Then, think about everything tracked in from outside – sand, dirt, leaves.  Without question, all floors need to be cleaned, even coated concrete!

What if your concrete coating is in the garage or around your pool?  Granted, you don’t vacuum your pool deck.  But, cleaning your concrete coating, no matter where it is located, will help it maintain its beautiful appearance.

How Do I Clean Concrete Coating?

Concrete coatings are low maintenance as we mentioned.  Cleaning them is not a difficult or time-consuming task.

1. Sweep or vacuum – You can either sweep or vacuum up loose debris from your interior flooring.  Outside, you can sweep or even use a blower!  The main objective is to remove loose dust, dirt, and pet hair.
2. Mop – You can mop using a mild cleaning solution, such as dish soap mixed into warm water.  You never need to use any harsh abrasives to clean your concrete coating and should not use them.  For outside, you can use a hose or power washer.  You do not need to use an industrial power washer.  A simple power sprayer that you use for regular, outdoor chores like washing your car will be sufficient.
3. Rinse – If your floor seems soapy, run a mop over it with plain water to remove any remaining soapy water.  This will keep your floor from becoming slippery and also from getting a dull appearance from soap residue.  Additionally, soap is sticky and will actually attract more dirt and make the floor dirtier if not rinsed properly.

How Do I Remove Spills and Stains?

The good news is that polyurea concrete coatings are stain-resistant!  If a spill happens, simply clean it with a rag and soapy water, just like you would use when mopping.  Stains should not occur, but if a spill goes unnoticed and dries on the floor, no need to panic.  It may take a little elbow grease, but it will still come off with a rag and soapy water.  If you do happen to encounter a more stubborn stain and feel you need something stronger than soapy water, only use solutions that are designed for polyurea coatings.

What If You Damage Your Polyurea Concrete Coating?

It is quite difficult to damage concrete coatings, but they are not indestructible.  If you have used abrasive cleaners or spilled harmful chemicals, perhaps your floor appears a bit damaged or lacks its former luster, now having a dull appearance.  Maybe it has sustained scratches – not easy to do, but not necessarily impossible.

If your concrete coating is damaged, you may be worried that you have to have the entire floor re-coated.  Fear not.  We can do repairs on your floors.  They are quite durable and stain-resistant though.  In case you didn’t know, they don’t chip even when hit with a sledgehammer!  In fact, we will be slightly impressed if you are able to damage them.  And, we will gladly repair them.
